Twitter is aflame with the various tweets of the attackers and viewers of what is going on:
After my quick review of the top ten in our Security Analyzed page this morning, I saw NakedSecurityBlog
With a review of http://www.thelocal.fr/20150116/hackers-take-down-20000-french-websites website with the headline: “Islamist hackers attack 20,000 French websites”
It is obvious with one of the Twitter posts @Izzahhackers: “Those engaged in #OpFrance think about the result be careful what you target. Good sites like charities must not be targeted!”
I am sure that the unethical hackers with a political bent are not likely distinguishing between good and bad French sites. Because all of France supported Charlie Hebdo publication by buying so many of the newspapers. And the general mood of the nation with the demonstrations etc.
Anyway this is a Cyber security blog, and I want to point out that in a large operation like this the unethical political hackers will not make a distinction between “good and bad” sites. If you have a French site your security status better be in good shape with the requisite tests etc. Otherwise your site will take a hit, at least by DOS – or Denial of Service where your site will not be usable by legitimate users.
Unsophisticated hackers can attack your site with relatively easy to use tools (which are free) and attempt to find anything that you have open (Recon or Scan). Then they will do a Vulnerability Analysis(VA) from this initial scan that was done. Now comes the meat of it if in the VA there is a weakness in your website or firewall, then the unethical hacker will Penetrate and Exploit (PE). And once the hacker has penetrated and exploited your site the final ignomity of yours will be that the hacker now has CONTROL – or they have Pwned (slang in hacker language) you.
